Daily Do Good: University Of Minnesota Helps Dying Man See Son Graduate

Collin Brown gets to graduate from the University of Minnesota by himself, in probably the first one-student ceremony they’ve ever had. The school is helping his dad, Ken, fulfill a dying wish to see both of his children graduate from college.

Ken has ALS and isn’t expected to make it until the May 13 ceremony Collin would’ve been a part of, so the University created a one-graduate private graduation just for the family. He already saw his daughter graduate from the college and now he’s getting the special opportunity to see his son do it too, thanks to University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler.

Colin says if there is a silver lining to his dad’s illness, it’s been getting to know him better.

He says, “Maybe I wouldn’t have pursued as much advice and wisdom from him in college if I didn’t have that kind of prompting to say that my time with him is limited.”
