Daily Do Good: 91-Year-Old Donates $500K To His Towns Volunteer Fire Dept

Sam Sloan, a 91-year-old resident of Calhoun, Missouri, recently donated $500-thousand to the town's volunteer fire department. Sloan, who’s lived in Henry County since 1960, says he intended to make the donation for several years, and admits that it’s a “pretty good donation."

Calhoun Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mark Hardin says that the gift couldn’t have come at a better time. Much of the gear they’re currently using is outdated, dating back to the 80s and 90s, and at the end of the first quarter, they were down to $169 in their bank account. The department plans to use the generous donation to purchase three firetrucks, new equipment, and updated gear for their 28-person crew.

Sloan acknowledges that he doesn't know how to fix firefighting equipment, but he does know how to make money, so he’s doing what he can to contribute to the safety of his community. Chief Hardin says they plan to pay Sloan’s kindness forward by donating their old gear to help other nearby volunteer fire departments.
