It's easy to put the blame on the boss or your co-workers, but sometimes you need to look in the mirror to see if you are the actual cause of the stress.  Here are some common sources of major stress...

  • Lack of control.  This is the biggest cause of work stress.  People who feel like they have no control will often get stress-related illnessess.
  • Increased responsibility.  Stop taking on the entire work load and trying to do it all yourself!  Don't volunteer for every project, let others help out.
  • Not taking pride in your work.  If your job isn't meaningful you may find it stressful.  Feeling insecure about your job performance is another major source of stress.
  • Uncertainty about your work roles.  Being unsure abour your dutuies, how your job might be changing or if you report to more than one boss - can be, you guessed it - stressful.
  • Poor communication.  Tension on the job often comes from poor communication and that includes being unable to talk about your needs, concerns and frustrations.
  • Lack of support.  Without the support of your boss or coworkers you may have trouble solving problems that are the cause of stress for you.
  • Poor working conditions.  This can include unpleasant or dangerous physical conditions such as noise, crowded work space or ergonomic problems.
